Chasing birds on Rarotonga, Cook Islands

I got involved with the UBC iGEM team because of a growing interest in synthetic biology and a chance meeting with a past student on the bus.

In past live(s) I’ve completed an Honors Biochemistry degree at the University of Alberta and traveled around the South Pacific for a year studying birds, fruit picking and isolating interesting natural products from sea sponges.

My current Ph.D. work focuses on characterizing a new chlorophyll biosynthetic pathway that I discovered in 2007 in which ferrochelatase (involved in heme synthesis) can functionally substitute for a knockout in the first step of chlorophyll synthesis.

I hope to complete my thesis in Microbiology here at UBC by the end of 2009 just shortly after returning from the Jamboree with the goods!
